WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

I had some problems with my schedule. I very deeply overbooked myself throughout the past couple weeks. I managed to get by in all the things I’m doing. I just didn’t end up having a lot of free time. I have decided to continue that path of overbooking myself starting next week with yet another play I’m doing. I’ll probably still get by.

I liked that there was a lot of flexibility in the class. Like how my brother could turn in work in the dead of night while I could do it at a reasonable hour.

School of Rock – Day 13 – Collaboration and Growth – Part 3

SUMMARY

I did a lot of work on the song today.

LEADERSHIP ACTIVITY

SMART Goal

We will create a small composition by July 24th.

Progress For Today

This is the basic melody. I’m probably going to add an ending but it’s probably going to be mostly repeated.

PRACTICE ROOM (GUITAR LESSONS)

I really liked the videos. Especially the first one.

CLASSROOM (THEORY & ANALYSIS)

LAB (THEORY PRACTICED)

  • Explore the tutorials (but you do not need to watch all of them – just pick what looks interesting to you) from the:
  • Embed a YouTube video link or links you watched
  • Write a reflection on what you learned – AND THEN DELETE THESE WORDS!

OUTSIDE (CREATIVITY & THE BRAIN)

I took a walk outside today. It was super hot!

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

I had a little writer’s block with the melody s it took a lot longer than I thought it would. I eventually got something pretty decent.

I went on a walk with my mom. When I have preformed in the past I have made a couple mistakes. I sometimes get end up focusing too much on technicalities in my performance and end up losing the emotion. Usually if I just let myself get lost in the music and emotions I will actually end up doing better both emotionally and technically.

STUDIO (SONGWRITING)

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

Today I had difficulty in time management. I eventually found time to just get the work done and turn it in. I am having to do a lot of work for Les Mis but I’m still trying to do a good amount of work for this class.

Leadership Project (SMART Goal Evidence)

Here’s the final product

Composition Elements

PRACTICE ROOM (GUITAR LESSONS)

CLASSROOM (THEORY & ANALYSIS)

LAB (THEORY PRACTICED)

I was pretty much done with my part in the song by today.

OUTSIDE (CREATIVITY & THE BRAIN)

I went on a pretty long walk before the zoom today. I didn’t bring my music so I was just taking in the nature and listening to the birds. I kinda helps me get up and feel ready for the day.

STUDIO (SONGWRITING)

I was pretty much done with my part in the song by today.

CONTROL ROOM (RECORDING & MIXING)

I helped my brother with recording for awhile.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

My main problem was when I was helping my brother with his recording. There was a lot of audio distortion. He ended up having to put in the notes in soundtrap rather than use the amp.

School of Rock – Day 11 – Collaboration and Growth – Part 1

SUMMARY

I wasn’t able to to do much leadership work today but. I tried to do what I could.

LEADERSHIP ACTIVITY

Goal

We didn’t really have a good meeting today so we weren’t able to fill out the forms. I know its going to be a song but we haven’t even decided how long it’s going to be.

What do I/we want to do? (SPECIFIC INTENTION / FEELING / LOGLINE)

Your answer goes here…

EXAMPLE: Someone fighting some thing for something.

How do I/we achieve it? (PLANNING & STRATEGY)

Your answer goes here…

What is the MVP (Minimum Viable Product)? (MEASURABLE Evidence)

Your answer goes here…

EXAMPLE: I will have a completed song of 68 measures.

INTENTION

Write your SMART goal here…

SAMPLE: “By July 23, as part of my School of Rock team/class and by following the Jake Lizzio’s power chord tutorial, I will have created a three-chord riff going from tonic to dominant for my Summer School project.”

RESOURCES

Soundtrap mostly with the help of trello for communication.

BACKGROUND

I can read sheet music and am pretty familiar with music theory.

Progress For Today

I added a couple simple melodies to the soundtrap.

PRACTICE ROOM (GUITAR LESSONS)

I pulled out my guitar and had some pretty good practice time with it. I was basically just working on switching from chord to chord.

OUTSIDE (CREATIVITY & THE BRAIN)

I didn’t find the podcast super stimulating. I did like the ideas of taking time to discover yourself. I guess I’m kinda the type of person who never lets themseves stop moving. I took a walk and it was SUPER hot outside.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

I had the problem that the whole group was not there for the meeting today. I tried to solve that by doing as much work as I could just by myself.

School of Rock – Day 11 – Collaboration and Growth

SUMMARY

I basically just worked on some simple melody ideas for the group project.

LEADERSHIP ACTIVITY

We haven’t started composing yet. We still need to meet for some planning things out of the way before we can start with that. But I did play around and come up with a couple simple melodies.

These are pretty simple but I just though Id come up with a couple four bar melodies. I have the sheet music written down. I had to communicate with my brother about the project.

STUDIO (SONGWRITING)

I wrote a couple melody ideas using hookpad and then wrote them down on sheet music. It doesn’t sound like much but it took a while. Especially getting a decent recording of them.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

My main problem I had today was trying to get the videos recorded and linked in the blog post. The first melody was super easy to write. It kinda just came to me. the second one was a little more difficult.  There were many more failed attempts before I came up with this.

TODAY’s ACTIVITY EVALUATION

SUMMARY

I think I did a pretty good job with these assignments below. I also talked to my brother for while on how are leadership thing should go.

PRACTICE ROOM (GUITAR LESSONS) – 90 mins

I spent about 60 minutes watching his videos an another 30 minutes just practicing by myself. I got a pretty good amount of practice in. I might practice more later if I feel like it.

LAB (THEORY PRACTICED) – 30 mins

Its nice to know how writing lyrics works. It as also nice to watch as I’ve never put lyrics to actual music before so it was nice to see how.

OUTSIDE (CREATIVITY & THE BRAIN) – 30 mins

I took a walk to think about this with my dog fluffy. I think some of her strategies might work for me somewhat. I do have a need for more structure in my schedule, but my brain doesn’t respond well to too much structure. I can Often jump to guilting myself if I get behind schedule, which is not helpful at all. One thing I’ve tried is telling myself, rather then I have to do this or I should do this, to tel myself that I want to do that thing for myself. It’s super simple and sounds weird but it really gives me more motivation for some reason.

STUDIO (SONGWRITING) – 30 mins

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

My main challenge today was overcoming a lack of motivation. Luckily I watched the brainstorming video first. After that and a walk I was ready to get to work on my assignments.

School of Rock – Day 8 – Leadership

SUMMARY

I was fairly engaged with todays work and spent a good amount of time on the guitar.

PRACTICE ROOM (GUITAR LESSONS)

I’m getting a lot better at switching between chords. I got a lot better at the A chord. These videos are super helpful making it all seem more simple.

STUDIO (SONGWRITING)

I watched Holitic songwriting’s videos on how to write chords. It was really interesting to see his approach to writing chords. It really just made me want to play around with soundtrap for a bit. So I did.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

I spent most of the day working on the guitar. I watched some of the guitar lessons and then went straight into some practicing. Then I went to watch some of the songwritting corner videos and then played around in soundtrap for awhile. The main problem I had for today was choosing which leadership option I should pick. I eventually talked with my brother and we decided that we were going to work together on the group leadership project.

Watch Jane McGonigal: The game that can give you 10 extra years of life.  (20 minutes)

Its interesting to see these deathbed regrets. I don’t want to go out regretting a lot. Thinking about it kind of reminded me of this poem “Fiddler Jones” by Edgar Lee Masters. The poem is about a Farmer who chooses to follow his dreams with the fiddle and live life to the fullest rather then do what is expected of him. And on his deathbed he is not traditionally successful and yet he has no regrets on the life he has lived. The idea of prioritizing that happiness and taking time to play games is nice.

School of Rock – Day 6 – Bass Basics

SUMMARY

It went pretty well today. Though I kept getting distracted.

CLASSROOM

Watch How Bass Works (47 minutes)

  • Bass has only been around for a few centuries
  • Tonality – the keys and chords of western music
  • The organ showed that bass instruments should be a lot lower than others
  • The bass line can often create contrasting lines between the melody and bass. one goes up while the other goes down.
  • mirror imaging
  • basing bass lines on scales
  • Chomatic scale bass lines
    • They reference Dito’s lament which one of my favorite operatic mezzo songs!
  • riffs – lines of bass
  • Good bass lines can become more than just the base for the rest of musical elements
  • Bass is a main element in modern dance music

LAB

Step 1: Watch How to write Chromatic Notes in Hookpad (some bass lines are based on chromatic scale)

screenshot from HookTab

Step 2: Watch 3 ways to use Hookpad’s MIDI drag-drop feature (you can create basslines and more and export to Soundtrap and other DAW – digital audio workstations)

Screenshot from HookLab

Step 3: Try making a bassline to a chord progress or melody line.

It was interesting coming up with bass lines. My mom used to play bass guitar in a band and would come up with bass lines so this made me think of her.

PRACTICE ROOM

Step 1: Watch How To Add Bass Notes [Guitar Strumming Lessons] by Tomas Michaud

Step 2: Download the guitar TABS for his exercise (PDF)

Step 3: Practice one of the exercises

These exercises are going pretty well for me. its nice to have the the exercise written out.
